Custom Animation

Custom Animation in PowerPoint helps add effects to objects in a slide show in order to make them animate. It can be used to animate all kinds of objects, be it pictures, charts or even graphs. Presenters like to add animations to their presentations with the aim of making them more appealing and dynamic. Also, an animated presentation will make a better impression on the viewers. This is what makes Custom Animation so appealing too. These are added under the Custom Animation function. It can also be done via the use of visual basic for Applications. Though the earlier versions of PowerPoint (the ones that were in 2000 and the earlier versions) did have this function, its features were rather limited. It offered only certain basic effects like Dissolve, Fly, Appear, etc; the newer versions have been better improved and come with a lot more set of effects. These effects were basically grouped into four main categories- Emphasis, Entrance, Exit and Motion Path. These were modified even more in 2010 version.

Custom Animation Effects

Each of these custom animation effects work only at a particular point of time in the slideshow. The Entrance effects are those that affect the objects when they enter the slide show. They basically instruct PowerPoint regarding the appearance of the item in the presentation. As a default setting, any graphic or display items will simply just appear in the slideshow. What these Entrance Effects do is that they help determine the style in which the object will enter the slideshow. It also controls when and the object enters the slideshow. A major advantage of this function is that it enables the present any graphical items attached with a slide before, during or after the presentation of the slide.

The Emphasis Effects make the object animate on the spot, i.e. when they have entered that slideshow and established themselves. So, basically with the help of emphasis effects the presenter can grow, shrink, fade, and change color or fonts of every object in the slide in a particular order or at will. They can even make the object transparent. This can enable the presenter to address each element in the slide individually.

Exit Effects let the objects leave the slide show with a certain animation. These effects can be used in many ways. They can be subtle and they can be catchy. They can also be used to collude the exit of one slide with the entrance of another, thereby adding an appealing nature to the slideshow.

Finally, Motion Paths facilitate objects to move around in the slide. Each of these effects plays an important role in animating the slides. What makes these really flexible and viewer-interactive is that they all contain variables like start, speed up, delay, repeat and/or trigger. These act like cues for these effects to work.

These basically aim at allowing the presenter to create movement in the presentation. Motion Paths can help move images across the scene. The presenter can move the object anytime at his will in the presentation and move it back in place. There are some 65 Motion Paths available for the presenter to choose from. PowerPoint also enables the presenter to create a custom Motion Path.
